If you’re considering an ADHD assessment for yourself or your child, one of the first questions that often comes up is whether to go through the NHS or choose a private provider.

At Bright Star ADHD, we are a private clinic, so we understand the benefits of what we offer. But we also know that the right choice is different for every person and family. It depends on what matters most to you - whether that’s speed, cost, support options or convenience.

This blog will walk you through the key differences between the two routes to help you feel informed and supported in your decision.

The NHS Assessment Process

Choosing to go through the NHS means accessing services through your GP, who may refer you or your child to a local ADHD pathway or CAMHS team (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services).

Benefits of the NHS route

One of the biggest advantages is that it is free at the point of use. NHS assessments are publicly funded, which makes them more accessible to many people. Once a diagnosis is confirmed, the NHS may also provide ongoing support, such as referrals to other mental health services or access to prescribed medication at no cost beyond standard prescriptions.

Challenges to consider

The demand for NHS assessments is very high, which means waiting times can be long. Many families and individuals face delays of 12 to 36 months just to receive an initial appointment. For some, this delay can have a significant impact on school, work, or emotional wellbeing.

In some areas, NHS services may also offer shorter or more standardised assessments, depending on local resources. While all NHS providers follow clinical guidelines, the depth and flexibility of the process can vary from one region to another.

The Private ADHD Assessment Route

Choosing a private assessment allows you to move forward at your own pace, often with quicker access and more personalised care. At Bright Star ADHD, we focus on creating a safe, supportive, and thorough experience for each client.

Why people choose private assessments

One of the main reasons people go private is the ability to be seen sooner. At Bright Star, we typically offer appointments within a few weeks. This means families can access clarity and support without years of waiting.

Our assessments are designed to be detailed and person-centred. For young people, this includes input from home and school, a full developmental history, a clinical interview, and a comprehensive written report that includes tailored recommendations. Reports follow NICE guidelines and are recognised by schools, GPs, and NHS services.

We also support the shared care process. If medication is appropriate, we can work with your GP to help you access prescriptions through the NHS once treatment is stable.

Considerations with private care

Private assessments come with an upfront cost, which may not be accessible to everyone. While we aim to offer clear value through the quality of care, clinical time, and support included, we understand that cost is a key factor for many families.

It’s also important to note that we are not directly connected to NHS mental health services. If a specific support is needed beyond ADHD, you may still need to use NHS pathways for therapy or additional care.

Which Route Is Right for You?

There’s no one right answer. Some families choose to wait for the NHS because it’s free and familiar. Others go private for quicker access, a more in-depth process, or simply peace of mind.

Some clients even use both. For example, they may receive a private diagnosis and then transfer ongoing medication to the NHS through a shared care agreement.

What matters most is that you feel heard, supported, and confident in the care you receive.
