Supporting Your Teen With Clarity, Compassion and Clinical Expertise
If you're wondering whether your child or teenager might have ADHD, you're not alone and you’re in the right place.
At Bright Star ADHD, we work with families every day who are searching for answers. You may be noticing challenges at home, at school, or in your child’s friendships and daily routines. It can be difficult to know what’s typical and what might signal something more. That’s where we come in.
This blog is here to answer some of the most common questions about ADHD assessments for young people, and help you feel informed, supported, and empowered to take the next step if and when you're ready.
Who do Bright Star assess?
We offer ADHD assessments for adults 18+ and young people aged 12 to 17 at our clinic in Hastings, East Sussex, or online via Zoom.
If your child is under 12, we may still be able to support you with guidance or suggest early intervention options. Just reach out and we’ll talk it through with you.
What are some signs my child might have ADHD?
Every young person is unique, and ADHD can present differently from one child to the next. Here are some common patterns that might raise questions:
Your child is easily distracted or forgetful
They often seem restless, always on the go — or, alternatively, they zone out or daydream
They find schoolwork, organisation, or routines particularly difficult
Their emotions seem intense, change quickly, or feel hard for them to regulate
They often feel misunderstood, overwhelmed or struggle with confidence
These behaviours can be frustrating or confusing for both children and parents. But they aren’t signs of failure - they may simply reflect that your child’s brain works a little differently.
What does an ADHD assessment for a young person involve?
At Bright Star, we aim to create a safe, respectful, and child-friendly process that gives you meaningful answers.
A full ADHD assessment includes:
Pre-assessment forms completed by parents and your child’s school
A detailed parent interview to explore developmental and behavioural history
A clinical review of your child’s emotional and cognitive profile
An optional interview with your child (age-appropriate and supportive)
Use of validated ADHD diagnostic tools
A thorough clinical report with a clear diagnosis and personalised recommendations
Advice on next steps, including medication guidance and school support strategies
Whether your assessment is conducted in person or online, your child will be treated with care, patience, and respect. We never rush the process.
Is the report recognised by schools and the NHS?
Yes, it is.
Your child’s report will be written to align with NICE guidelines and is accepted by:
NHS GPs
CAMHS
Schools and SEN departments
Other healthcare providers
This means you can use it to access additional support, request accommodations at school, or arrange shared care for medication if needed.
Do both parents or carers need to attend?
It’s ideal if both parents or main caregivers can attend the assessment interview, especially if they both play an active role in the child’s life.
However, we understand this isn’t always possible. We’re flexible and will work with you to make the process accessible and inclusive.
Can the assessment be done online?
Yes.
We offer both face-to-face assessments in Hastings and Zoom-based assessments for families who prefer to stay remote. The experience and outcome are the same — we simply adapt to your needs.
Will my child be prescribed medication?
That decision is entirely yours as the parent or carer.
If medication is something you're open to exploring, our ADHD Nurse Prescriber can walk you through all the available options, side effects, and expected outcomes in a calm, informed setting.
Many families find that a blended approach works best - combining medication with lifestyle support, school accommodations, and emotional regulation strategies.
But rest assured, there is no pressure to take that route if it doesn’t feel right for you.
Will the report help my child at school?
Absolutely.
One of the biggest benefits of an ADHD assessment is being able to help teachers and school staff better understand and support your child.
Our reports include practical, specific recommendations for the classroom, which can be shared with SENCOs, learning support teams, and educators.
When schools have clear insight into your child’s needs, it often leads to more compassionate communication, better outcomes, and improved confidence for the young person.
What does it cost?
A full ADHD assessment for young people (ages 12+) is £820. This includes:
Clinical review
School and home questionnaires
Full written report
Personalised treatment and support recommendations
Payment is due at the time of booking, and we offer flexible rescheduling policies if needed.
